Second Trimester Recap!

My 22 week bump!

My 22 week bump!

This pregnancy is just flying by! The second trimester was a wonderful experience for me. I loved feeling my body “bloom” with the arrival of Spring. In this post, I share my second trimester experience, including how I’ve been feeling, second trimester highlights, and the products and resources I’ve been loving. I also answer my most frequently asked questions!

Curious about my first trimester? Check out this post.

How have you been feeling physically?

  • I’ve been feeling amazing! I definitely experienced the second trimester as the “honeymoon trimester” many describe. I had good energy, no nausea, and glowing skin. It was such a joy to feel my bump “pop” around 20 weeks, although I didn’t have any stranger comment on my pregnancy until 26 weeks.

  • Unlike my first trimester, I had the energy and strength to make it through a workout! I really enjoyed walking, prenatal yoga (by the way, you can join me for prenatal yoga on Tuesdays and Saturdays!), and Barre3 (they have a prenatal series that is amazing!).

  • I did experience some round ligament pain during my second trimester. It was always the worst when Arthur would make me laugh! Sometimes I would experience it when turning over in bed. Thankfully prenatal yoga and regular visits to the chiropractor helped so much.

  • Dizziness — this was the weirdest symptom I experienced! It’s totally normal for pregnant women to feel dizzy, especially in the second trimester. I had normal levels of dizziness throughout the second trimester, but one morning, it got weird! I was sitting on the couch with Arthur while he drank his coffee, and all of a sudden I had the strangest sensation -- I felt exactly like I was on the Tilt-A-Whirl ride! I actually grabbed onto his arm because I felt scared! Thankfully I didn’t faint and the feeling passed quickly, but it was so weird!

  • My thyroid levels were great! I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, a condition that impacts my thyroid and fertility. It’s important for women with thyroid conditions to be monitored regularly during pregnancy, since there is an increased demand on the thyroid during this time. Thankfully my thyroid levels were pretty good throughout my second trimester. I did need to increase the dose of my medication once, but otherwise things looked good!

  • When did you feel baby move?

    • I actually started feeling baby move in my first trimester, around 12 weeks. That’s pretty early, but my midwife said it makes sense because I’m so sensitive. At first, it felt like little bubbles, like I had something “fizzy” in my belly. As the weeks went on, I felt flutters, taps, and throbs. Toward the end of the second trimester, baby was kicking hard enough for Arthur to feel through my belly!

Second Trimester Highlights

  • 14 week ultrasound

    • This was so fun! My midwives were looking for volunteers to help them with a training on using an ultrasound machine. I volunteered and loved it! It was so cool to be the only “patient” in a room full of amazing midwives. The technician facilitating the training was even able to give us an “unofficial” sex determination!

  • Our 20 week ultrasound!

    • We decided to head up to Maine General in Augusta for our 20 week scan since they were allowing partners to attend appointments (Maine Med was not). Getting to see baby up close was so amazing! I had this amazing moment looking at baby’s heart. The technician was looking at all four chambers of the heart, and it struck me that this will (hopefully) be the only time I ever see my child’s heart in such detail. It was such a relief to see that baby was developing right on track (the technician was even impressed that our expected due date exactly matched the due date her computer model gave after looking at baby’s measurements!). We also got so many wonderful photos of baby!

  • “Just for fun” ultrasound

    • While I was in Florida, my aunt and Arthur’s mother and I scheduled a “just for fun’ ultrasound in Sarasota. It was such a precious experience! We got a full hour of watching Baby Crosby twist and turn inside me. The technician took a bunch of cute photos of baby too! It was a really sweet way to include them in my pregnancy journey.

  • Photoshoot

    • This was a blast! I had some prenatal yoga photos done by the fabulous Kate of Kate Michaud Photography! I’ve known Kate for a few years and she is truly an angel person (and an amazing photographer!)! Kate helped me document my journey as a prenatal yoga teacher and highlighted my growing bump. It was so sweet and I know I’ll treasure these photos forever!

How has pregnancy continued to impact you spiritually and emotionally?

For me, pregnancy has been a beautiful lesson in being and becoming. Throughout this journey, I’ve been struck by the beauty of knowing that this is all unfolding on its own without any effort on my part. I don’t need to do anything at all except exist. What a wonderful revelation! After an entire lifetime of “hustling” and focusing on earning my worth through productivity, this emotional shift is such a welcome gift. You don’t need to be pregnant to claim this for yourself! You are worthy and good simply because you exist. I’ve been thinking about this lately. It’s a belief I want my child to have, and one I intend on modeling moving forward.

I’ve also been feeling more “open” and receptive in general. I find I pick up on energy and spiritual messages much easier during pregnancy. Especially while I’m walking outside among my trees, I feel very connected and able to receive their wisdom with ease.

Speaking of receiving, I’ve found it much easier to receive during my pregnancy! Maybe it’s because loved ones are so attentive to my needs, but I’ve had an easier time knowing what it is I need and asking for it without shame or fear. I’ve struggled with that my whole life, and this has been another welcome gift of pregnancy!

I’ve also found this pregnancy has helped deepen the connection that Arthur and I share. Arthur has certainly experienced shifts during this time as well, and while I can’t speak for him, I can say I’ve enjoyed experiencing his tenderness during this pregnancy. Feeling how much he cares for me and our baby, and how devoted he is to our happiness and wellbeing is such a gift.

Where do you find your maternity clothes?

  • I’ve only picked up a few items that are maternity specific. Some places I’ve shopped for maternity-specific clothes are Target and Hatch. I also had a beautiful maternity dress gifted to me by Renly Maternity! Check them out here. They actually allow you to rent items if you want, which is amazing during pregnancy since your size changes so fast! They graciously shared a discount code with me for you! Just enter light30 at checkout!

  • I’ve also loved buying dresses in a size or two bigger than my normal size, and that served me well during my second trimester.

  • I get asked often about my yoga attire during pregnancy! So far I’ve been loving the Align Leggings by Lululemon! I just sized up one from my pre-pregnancy size. They aren’t maternity-specific, but they do have plenty of stretch. I love the Align shorts too!

wHAT PRODUCTS SUPPORTED YOU DURING YOUR SECOND TRIMESTER?

  • The Snoogle! This pregnancy pillow is the best! I’ve used it every single night throughout the second trimester. I find it helps me stay comfortable while I sleep on my side. This pillow helps keep the hips aligned, reducing pain and discomfort!

  • I relied a ton on this magnesium powder in my first and second trimesters! In the first trimester, I found that it helped with my nausea. In the second trimester, it helped me with preventing leg cramps and just feeling good in general! I do take a calcium-magnesium supplement each night, so I use this powder whenever I feel like I need a bit more.

  • If you follow me on Instagram, you know I use my Vitamix all the time! You also know that I have been obsessed with strawberry ice cream. I’ve been experimenting with ways to make a healthier option at home, and my Vitamix has been amazing! I love how easy it is to whip some up right when I have a craving.

What resources supported you during your second trimester?

  • Books

    • The Birth Partner - this book was assigned reading in my Doula training, and I think it is so helpful for anyone who is preparing to birth! It’s a great resource for the partner of a birthing person. Arthur didn’t read it himself, but I plan on making some “cheat sheets” from the chapter summaries for him!

    • Expecting Better - my Doula Book Club read this book, and I really enjoyed it. Lots of great information, especially for those who love “hard data.” Of course I always recommend filtering information through our own inner wisdom -- some of her assertions or the things she recommends just didn’t feel right to me. I’m someone who loves to understand “all sides” of any issue, so it was nice to read a book like this, even if I didn’t ultimately agree with everything.

    • Latch - another gem from Doula Book Club! This is a great book about breastfeeding! I’ll admit I felt worried about breastfeeding. I’ve heard so many nightmare stories! This book is super relatable and easy to understand! I highly recommend it if you are hoping to breastfeed!

  • People

    • Chiropractor — my chiropractor, Dr. Emlet (and really all the doctors at this practice!), has been so helpful throughout my pregnancy! During the second trimester, he helped me with some tailbone discomfort. I found getting regular adjustments really help me feel good!

    • Pelvic Floor PT - I see Jenn at Root to Rise Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health. She’s amazing! In my second trimester, she helped me make sure I was safely working my core and prepping my body for birth.

Thanks so much for sharing this journey with me! Carrying my child during this pregnancy has been such a beautiful gift, and quite the adventure! For those of you who are or have been pregnant, what was the second trimester like for you? I’d love to hear!
